Glow-in-the-Dark vs Thermochromic: Which Specialty Bead Fits Your Project?

Two effects, two behaviours

Glow-in-the-dark beads store light and release it slowly. Thermochromic beads change colour when the temperature moves. They look similar on a colour card, but they behave very differently once the project is finished.

Glow-in-the-dark: light in, light out

Luminous pigments charge under daylight or a lamp and glow for a while in the dark. The effect is strongest on pale colours, which is why Series A and Series C sit in the cream, honey and ice-blue range. Use them for star ceilings, night lights, keychains and anything that is meant to surprise after dark.

Thermochromic: colour that reacts to touch

Series B changes colour as the temperature rises — a warm hand or a cup of tea is enough. That makes it a natural fit for mugs, phone charms and interactive craft kits where the customer wants to see something happen.

What to check before you order

Ask for a fused sample, not just loose beads: heat changes how both effects read. Also confirm the temperature range and the number of cycles you need, and keep the ironing temperature inside the range your supplier recommends.
